Ten OHS Band Members Advance to State

Ten Olney High School Band students
will advance to the 2010 UIL Texas
State Solo and Ensemble Contest to be held in May based on their
performances
at the UIL Region 2 Solo and Ensemble Contest held Saturday at
Wichita Falls High
School.
Members of the brass sextet advancing to the state level include
senior
Derek B. on French horn, juniors Katie T. (trumpet), Brittany
M.
(euphonium), and Stephen R. (trombone). Freshmen Zach B. on
trumpet
and Tyler W. on tuba completed the group. The selection performed
was
“Bartok for Brass” by Bela Bartok and arranged by Siekmann.
Percussion ensemble members also qualifying for TSSEC include
juniors
Malia T., Reed M., and John C. Freshman Vivian G. was also
part of the quartet that performed “Statements” by Robert
Muczynski.
In solo competition, freshman Britney R. received a Division 1 on
a
Class 2 clarinet solo.
Eighth graders Schelby M. performing
a baritone saxophone solo and
Hannah T. on a French horn solo both received a Division 1 rating
on their
Class 3 solos.
Other OHS students performing in the
competition included senior Derek
B. who received a “fair” rating on his Class 1.French horn solo.
The flute
-2-quartet of juniors Nikki C. and Samantha C. and freshmen Kelzye
I. and Brittanie P. also received a “fair” rating for their
performance of “Sonatina
Giocosa” by McKay.
In order to advance to TSSEC a
student must perform a Class 1 solo from
memory and receive a Division 1 rating or be a member of a Class 1
ensemble that
receives a Division 1 rating.
State competition is set for Memorial Day weekend at Hendrickson
High
School in Pflugerville, Texas.
